The 20 Best Ideas for Halloween Desserts
You Can Get In This Season
Ah, Halloween, the scary season! Yeah, not so scary anymore, if you exclude the trip to the dentist after it. Having that in mind, I came together with a big list of interesting dessert ideas that not only will look and taste good, but there are also even some healthy options to give your kids instead of high sugar candy bars.
There are twenty best ideas for Halloween desserts to choose from, which will make a great addition to your Halloween party, or a great candy to hand out to the kids!
1. Graveyard Mousse Pots
- Time: 20min.
- Level: Advanced.
- Servings: 4.
- Raw, Vegan.
Make tasty servings of mousse pots with tombstone cookies. I liked this idea because it’s very simple and creative. Making process is not complicated, and it can be done pretty quickly. This sweet delight can surprise people and make them admire your creative dessert. These pots can be a great addition to a house party, and you can even add a little rum to the mix. To prepare these, you will actually need two recipes; you will have to make them in two separate parts. But, all together it won’t take much time for completion.
First, you have to prepare the mousse, and then you can start to work on the cookies. The mousse has a chocolate taste with a hint of avocado, and the cookies are a nice contrast to the chocolate with their sour taste. The icing top everything with coconut flavor and vanilla smell.
2. Suggar Skull Pizza
- Time: 35min.
- Level: Beginner.
- Servings: 8-10.
Scary and beautiful at the same time, give it a try to make a Dia De Los Muertos sweet skull pizza. It’s extremely simple to make and it can serve as the center of the table for your Halloween party. It’s a very light dessert full of tasty fruit, making it a great dessert solution that is not overloaded with sugar. The only effort it requires is to bake a cookie base; the rest is a simple decoration process. Cream cheese frosting makes it very light and creamy, while the accent of this dessert is in its appearance.
You can even include the kids to make one with you because it’s so simple to make and it will surely make them happy to be the part of the process and then taste the reward of their own work. To decorate the skull you can use mandarin oranges, blueberries, raspberries, pineapple, kiwi, and strawberries. Of course, you can change the fruits as you like, but the point is to be as much colorful as possible. You don’t even have to follow the design provided with this recipe; you can make a couple of different ones, let your imagination do the work!
3. Witch’s Brew Dessert
- Time: 1h 30min.
- Level: Advanced.
- Servings: 4.
Create a crazy looking dessert that came straight out of witch’s kitchen. It will take a bit longer to complete it, but the result will amaze everybody. This dessert resembles pudding, and it should be served as one. It’s very light in ingredients, all you will need is milk, eggs, sugar, and tapioca. For decorations, you will need some scary gummy candies. Take an example from the picture in the recipe, or come up with your own. You can even add a witch doll standing next to the bowl to complete the look of her cooking this vile soup.
Once completed, you can serve it warm or chilled, but I would suggest you serve it chilled because it will have that slimy pudding-like texture, making it look more like something a witch would like to cook. You can decorate it further by surrounding it with candles, bats, and all other witch’s natural surroundings.
4. Complete Glam Collection
- Time: 2h.
- Level: Decorating expert.
- Servings: 4-5.
I’ve chosen this collection because it’s a complete themed setup of various desserts. It can cover an entire serving table for a Halloween party. The collection is consisted out of cupcakes, cookies, lollipops… All desserts are bought premade, and the only effort you will have to take is decorating and setting the whole thing up. It’s set up as a total presentation to each, and every dessert displayed. The mixture of greens and purples are a great blend for a glam Halloween. Some of the decoration parts are also bought finished, but you can easily make them on your own with a different setup or a different color theme, based on your imagined glam Halloween.
Most of the decorations can be made of paper using simple origami techniques. Even the wine glasses have themed labels on them! If you would like to have your homemade sweets instead of buying the finished ones, you can take an example from this collection on how to decorate and create this kind of presentation. You can even add a big cake to center all the cookies and cupcakes around it, to achieve an even complete and more fulfilled display.
5. Skull Cake
- Time: 90min.
- Level: Beginner.
- Servings: 4-5.
Dusty, eye bleeding skull cake that’s both scary and tasty. It’s quite simple to make; it just requires a mold for the skull to make it happen. All you need to be done is to grab a regular cake mix and mix it before you put it in the greased mold. You can add a food color of your desire, to make it blend into the color theme for your Halloween party. The red color makes it look pretty scary, but any other will be fine. It takes around 70 minutes to bake the cake at 325 degrees. The mold used in this idea is not that big, so it will have the leftovers which can be used to make an additional simple cake which you can give out to your friends when they head home. To pack the leftovers, you can use any regular meal prepping containers and put them in the bag to keep them fresh.
To make the decoration complete, you can sip the powdered sugar all over the skull to make it look dusty. Use icing bags and colored cream to decorate the area around the skull. For bleeding eyes effect, you can use raspberry jelly. Grab a couple of spoons of jelly and heat it up, so it becomes more liquid, then just sip it in the eyes and let it spill over the sides of the skull.
6. Ghost Meringue
- Time: 2h 15min.
- Level: Beginner.
- Servings: 12.
I’ve chosen this idea because I love these cookies! They are cute, and I love the texture and taste of them. They are very light and airy, and they look so simple and yet amazing. All you need to bake them is sugar, egg whites, and icing, that’s it! The prep time takes only around 15 minutes, while the baking process takes about 2 hours. You can decorate them with a simple toothpick and icing to give them a look as displayed in the example. Use white cupcake paper to complete the ghostly look. This dessert is great both for kids and adults, although I think the adults will have to fight for them.
You can even add some cream around them and top it with chocolate crumbs. Experiment with every idea, you don’t have to precisely stick to the picture. Give it your own distinctive look! Use a food coloring and make 3 different mixtures like green, red, or even black, then use white icing to create the ghost faces. If you want to make it even more detailed, cut the small bat-shaped papers, glue them to toothpicks and stick a couple of them in each cake.
7. Cinnamon Sugar Flour Tortilla Crisps
- Time: 20min.
- Level: Beginner.
- Servings: As much as you want!
These crispy desserts are one of the simplest ideas I could’ve imagined. All you need is a couple of tortillas, butter, and cinnamon sugar. Get bat-shaped cutters or any other shape you like and cut the tortillas. To make the cutting easier, preheat the tortillas a bit before you cut them, they might break into uneven pieces if being cut cold. Dip the cut shapes into butter and then into cinnamon sugar. You can even mix it a bit with a hint of lemon juice in the dip.
Bake the crisps around 10 minutes, and in a matter of 2 minutes, they are cool and ready for consummation. You can leave them plain as they are, but you can decorate them a bit further which will take up a bit more time. For example, you can melt the dark chocolate, and draw a face on them, or give the wings a bit more detail. If you have a big dessert setup in mind, check this idea out: make a tree decoration, puncture a hole on the top of the crisps and hang them on the tree with a string, the kids will love it!
8. Bloody Muffins
- Time: 30min.
- Level: Beginner.
- Servings: 6.
This idea looks perfect for the occasion. I bet you never tried beets as an ingredient for muffins, it tastes great and looks perfect for Halloween. The recipe is very easy to make, just like any standard muffin recipe you know. The shredded cooked beets change the color to match the Halloween perfectly. You can find and order the paper holders or make your own. I would go with my own, since it’s extremely easy to make, and you can make different variations to make the whole thing more interesting.
All you need is Photoshop and a printer. There are dozens of designs that are free to download on the web. You can make a simple and distinctive design just by using a gothic font and write something scary, like on the picture of the example. Regular paper can be used, it will be fine, but if you like you can use shiny one for a better look, but that will make the muffins a bit unreachable. If you don’t want the muffins to have this plain look, the decoration can be as simple as just putting some vanilla topping or a chocolate one. Or even you can use both and create a bloody eye out of it that will surely spice things up!
9. Pumpkin Ice Cream
- Time: 20min.
- Level: Beginner.
- Servings: 4-5.
Being the most common part of the Halloween, I had to include a recipe that has a pumpkin as the main ingredient. I love fast and simple recipes like this one; it gives a lot of spare time to make other desserts as well. Everybody likes ice cream, so this dessert is suitable both for kids and adults at the Halloween party. If you want to make it more appealing to the adults, sip a couple of teaspoons of whiskey into the separate mixture.
The making process is quite easy, the only thing missing in this example is a bit of decoration. Here are some ideas to tickle your imagination: get some Halloween themed glasses, or paint some of the blank ones if you want to put that much of effort to it. I’ve come across some little black spoons with spiders, bats, and skulls on the handles; you can try to find something similar. As for the decoration of the ice cream alone, I don’t think anything else is needed, but if you think of something, let me know in the comments!
10. Vampire Mouth Marshmallow Sandwich
- Time: 30min.
- Level: Advanced.
- Servings: 24.
This is an excellent and great looking idea! The kids will absolutely love it, but I have to warn you, they will likely more to play with them than eat them, making a mess in the process. You have been warned. I am joking of course, how one can avoid a mess on Halloween, it’s an impossible mission! But seeing the kids having fun and knowing that something you made generated that, makes cleaning up after them an easier task. You will need a big bag of mini marshmallows, cracker dough, cream cheese, butter, sugar and cocoa powder for the mix.
Usually, I like to add a bit my own touch to the decoration, but this seems like a complete design that doesn’t need anything added. They bake pretty fast; they are usually done in around 8 minutes. The combination of crispy cookies on top and bottom, and soft and jelly middle is great. One addition can be made, I just thought of this, you can use a strawberry topping to drip on the marshmallows to give them a bloody look. That will make the whole vampire theme more complete.
11. Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls
- Time: 1h 30min.
- Level: Advanced.
- Servings: 16.
A great soft pumpkin delight makes it perfect for Halloween. You will need a bit more time to finish making these, as it’s not that basic recipe. You will need a lot of ingredients and a bit more of baking experience to make the cinnamon rolls the right way. It’s a three-part process. The first step that needs to be done is to make the dough, then proceed to make the filling and in the end to glaze it up. The decoration is missing in this example, so I will provide you with some of my own ideas.
To create a lot of space for decoration, instead just glazing a bit on the top, you can glaze the entire rolls up and down. That will give you a plain white surface to draw different sketches using toppings or melted chocolate. Draw a simple skull with a toothpick and a bit of melted dark chocolate, use chocolate crumbs to make a spider shape or anything else that comes to your mind. Be creative!
12. Scary Eye Cookies
- Time: 3min.
- Level: Beginner.
- Servings: As much as you like!
- Gluten Free.
I included this recipe because it’s the simplest yet, so you can include the kids in the making of desserts. All you need is a package of cookies, jelly beans and a bit of melted chocolate. The only effort here is melting the chocolate. The rest can be done all by the kids themselves. They will absolutely love it! Remove the top part of the cookies and prepare the melted chocolate. To draw the eyes on the jellybeans, you can use a toothpick or any other tool suitable for drawing.
Let the kids draw the eyes on the jellybeans and put them on top of the cookie filling. To prevent the cookies from falling apart, sip the melted chocolate over the jellybeans and put the top cookie, so it sticks together. Remember to finish everything while the chocolate is still warm, so it sticks the cookies together. If you want to give it some extra look and cuteness since this idea is primarily for kids, you can use a whipped cream and make them hats out of it.
13. Hazy Ginger Moons
- Time: 15-20min.
- Level: Beginner.
- Servings: 12.
This idea is great for trick-or-treaters since it so easy to create. All you need is store-bought ginger snaps and a biscuit cutter with a little of additions like peanut butter, cinnamon, skim milk and white chocolate chips. Extremely simple to make, and a great gift for the kids, or to decorate your Halloween party. I would like to give you a bit more spicy idea: use a red food color and make the glaze with it, drip it all over the cookies, and there you have it – bloody moons!
The taste is great, cinnamon combined with peanut butter and a hint of chocolate gives a great blend of tastes in your mouth. To use these cookies as a part of the decoration for a Halloween party, you can drill a hole in them and use a thread to hand them on a spooky tree, complete with the ‘bloody moons’ idea. Here’s a bit of extra idea for you, hang them on the tree and position them, so they are concentrated together in a vertical group. Place a small pot underneath them and fill it with strawberry jam, so it looks like the blood dripping from the moons is going into the pot.
14. Black Magic Cake
- Time: 1h.
- Level: Advanced.
- Servings: 8.
I have the exact same reaction to every dark chocolate cake I come across. Seriously, is there anything more fulfilling than a dark chocolate taste? Maybe so, but this cake is awesome for Halloween. The main ingredients for this cake are dark chocolate, coffee, and buttermilk. All of them making it have a rich taste with a moist texture, it’s hardly resistible. This cake is not so much for trick-or-treaters as much it is for party guests. It will take you some time to bake it, but it’s meant to be the main dessert, so why not giving it some time.
For the decorations, you can go absolutely wild; every cake is suitable for dozens of variations and ideas for decoration. I have a couple of ideas of my own: of course, I like to go over the edge and complicate the things a little bit, so I would make this cake a foundation for a black magic ritual. Consider it as the soil on which the ritual is performed. Use a cherry topping to draw a pentagram on top, and use a witch doll and position it in a way that it looks like it’s casting a spell. Add a bunch of other details to make a whole thing look like the ground of an enchanted forest.
15. Cake Eyeballs
- Time: 120min.
- Level: Beginner.
- Servings: 6.
This is an awesome and creative idea; I just had to share! I love the idea of decorations on these, the kids love it, since they are served as a lollipop. One box of cake mix should be enough to make these, get one bag of lollipop sticks, melting chocolate and multiple color tubes gel icing. It’s so easy to bake them; you can use a pan to get it done. They are the size of a walnut once they are completed, and the taste is awesome. Make sure to put them in the freezer for at least an hour, so they are rock solid.
As for the decorations, I really have nothing to add in this case; they look absolutely adorable so simple. The only thing I could add is how they could be served. If you want to hand them out, then a simple cardboard holder with holes for sticks can be made. But if you want to make them a part of the party setup, I would suggest making a cake in a shape of the grave with a tombstone and then stick these into the grave, like they are coming out of it.
16. Ghostly Chestnut Chocolate Pudding Cups
- Time: 45min.
- Level: Beginner.
- Servings: As much as you like!
- Vegan.
One more ghostly idea with a bit different theme. Takes a few minutes to make these, but they should be put in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to chill. They are actually made of avocado, cocoa, and any natural sweetener. Not only they are tasty, but they are also healthy. Everything is done by blending the ingredients together and make a pudding. The ghosts are made of avocados. You can decorate the cups as you like, but this example is great in my opinion.
This dessert can be great for kids if you make it look colorful as it is in the example, but if you want to use this for an adult Halloween party, you can add a bit of alcohol to the pudding to make it more appealing. Plus avocados go great with alcohol. I’m not saying you should make jelly shots, but you can add rum or something else to the mix to make it a tasteful surprise.
17. Spider Bundt Cake
- Time: 90min.
- Level: Advanced.
- Servings: 8-12.
Such a great idea to convert the Bundt cake into a big spider! It’s very simple to make, and I love that. You literally only bake the cake and then decorate it in a few minutes, and you’re done. It’s a great cake for a party. You will need the ingredients for the cake and some tools to finish the decorating part, such as piping bags and tips and toothpicks. You can also get some candy to use it for spider eyes. There is a black and white variant, so you can make both, why not?
The cake itself is soft and tasty, and the frosting is giving it the extra flavor and the desired look. I know these cakes are meant to be scary, but I found these spiders more goofy than scary. The finished cake looks great, but it’s somehow plain to me, I would add a few more things to it. I would use a coconut and sip it all over the spider’s body and its legs, so it looks hairy. The same thing can be done with the black one using chocolate crumbs. Change what you don’t like, add a personal touch to it!
18. Pumpkin Oatmeal Candy Bar Cookies
- Time: 30min.
- Level: Beginner.
- Servings: 30.
A combination of crispy and soft! Probably my favorite combination for dessert of all time, cookies and chocolate. It’s simple to get this done, just mix the seeds with egg and vanilla, then add the pumpkin puree and the flour. Then just stir it in the oats and chocolate chips. You will need something to create a cookie shape, like cookie scoop or piping bags. You don’t have to make them flat; you can make them look like drops or any other shape, with a dough like this you can experiment with the shapes as you like. Place the chocolate on top and bake them around 10 minutes, so they are hardened, and the chocolate is melted on top.
No special kind of decoration here, you can serve them on a plate just as they are, and hand them out to trick-or-treaters. It’s a way healthier and much more tasteful option to give these cookies to the kids then just to buy unhealthy chocolate bars that will make their teeth fall off. I bet they will like these more than any other chocolate bar that’s widely produced.
19. Pumpkin Oreo Mini Cheesecakes
- Time: 30min.
- Level: Beginner.
- Servings: 12.
Ok, I love cheesecake and making a mini version of it never came to my mind actually, especially with the pumpkin theme. They are soft and tasty, with the hard base which is made of Oreos. Pretty simple to make, you will need a cupcake mold plate, paper holders, pumpkin spice Oreos, cream cheese, eggs, a few spices and mini candy pumpkins to put on top. You will get twelve cupcakes out of this recipe, great for a small party, well you could say you will use them for twelve people, but hardly will they stop at one piece.
I love the way they taste, the ingredients and how quick they are made, the only thing I would like to add to these is a bit of a scary look. I mean, those little pumpkins on top are just begging to have a scary face on them! By now you already know how I would handle that, if you have more ideas, please do share them with me!
20. Frozen Boonana Pops
- Time: Under 30mins.
- Level: Beginner.
- Servings: 4.
- Vegetarian
- Gluten Free
For the last, I had to include one more healthy option. You eat too much sugar kids; someone has to think about your health! Now, check this out, this is one especially meant for little ones, and we know they can’t resist popsicles. The catch is, they are made of bananas! To make four pieces, you only need one banana. Cut it vertically across and then horizontally in half. Stick a popsicle stick in each piece and sip the melted white chocolate all over them. To make the eyes, you can use chocolate chips.
I know they look great, but I would add a few more things. This is an article based on ideas, isn’t it? Well, check this one, take a piece of dark chocolate and melt it (you can use topping as well), draw a big scary mouth on each banana, you can even use strawberry topping to draw a tongue. You can be creative and make a different facial expression on each piece. One can laugh, other can be angry, etc. Did you think of something even better? Let me know what you thought of, so I can try it out!
Conclusion
And that concludes it! Twenty fresh, creative and tasty ideas for your Halloween party. I gave my best to include a variation of some of the ideas of my own, and I would really like to hear from you if you had some too! If you liked this article share it with your friends, and let them know I’m always in a search for new ideas for Halloween!
